  5. Tenth Annual Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg
  6.  
  7. The tenth annual Chaos Communication Congress began today in Hamburg's
  8. Eidelstedter Buergerhaus. The Congress has come to be a traditional
  9. meeting for hackers, taking place once a year between Christmas and New
  10. Year's Eve, offering visitors an insider's view into the world of data
  11. travel and electronics at play.
  12.  
  13. The main theme here, however, is not so much the technical side as the
  14. socio-political aspects involved. The question of government monitoring
  15. of networks affects everyone, and is one of the most pressing issues of
  16. this year. To what extent is monitoring technically possible? What are
  17. the political plans and intentions? How can the right to privacy be
  18. reconciled with a ban on encrypting programs? Experts in these fields
  19. have gathered to present information on the latest technological and
  20. legal aspects. Open discussion forums offer participants the opportunity
  21. to form their own opinions.

  23. The number of women hackers has been increasing, almost unnoticed by the
  24. public. "Haecksen", female hackers, are making significant contributions
  25. to the scene.

  27. This year, for the first time, there is a room set up at the congress
  28. for women only, offering opportunities for women to ask questions and
  29. participate in discussions.

  31. Other themes include electronic cash, copyright, people's networks and
  32. electronic democracy, MODACOM (Telekom's packet radio network) and ISDN,
  33. lock picking and bookkeeping discrepancies.

  35. And, as usual, the Electronic Café, the Chaos Archive, films (including
  36. training films from the Ministry for State Security of the former German
  37. Democratic Republic), a ZERBERUS-BBS, the Internet open information
  38. exchange, and all kinds of communication.
